GLP-1 Weight Loss Explained: How It Works, Side Effects & Natural Alternatives

GLP-1 Weight Loss Is Everywhere — But What Does It Really Mean?

GLP-1 weight loss has become one of the most talked-about topics in health and wellness. From medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Zepbound to conversations about blood sugar, cravings, and metabolism, many people are curious but also confused about what GLP-1 actually does in the body.

In this episode of the podcast, I sit down with registered dietitian Ashley Koff, RD, to unpack what GLP-1 really is, how it works, and why results can vary so dramatically from person to person especially for women.

What Is GLP-1?

GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) is a hormone produced in the lining of the digestive tract. It plays an important role in:

  • Appetite regulation

  • Blood sugar balance

  • Satiety and fullness cues

  • Communication between the gut and the brain

GLP-1 is not just something that exists in medications, it’s a hormone your body naturally produces. Medications simply amplify or mimic this signal in a much stronger, longer-lasting way.

How Does GLP-1 Support Weight Loss?

GLP-1 supports weight loss by helping the body feel full sooner, reducing food noise and cravings, and improving blood sugar regulation. However, weight loss is never just about one hormone.

As discussed in the episode, GLP-1 works alongside other key hormones like insulin, leptin, ghrelin, and CCK. Gut health, digestion, sleep, stress, and genetics all influence how effective GLP-1 signaling will be.

This is one reason why GLP-1 weight loss works well for some people and not for others.

GLP-1 Medications vs Natural GLP-1 Support

GLP-1 medications can be powerful tools, but they are not interchangeable with natural GLP-1 support.

Medications deliver a much stronger and longer-lasting signal than what the body produces on its own. For some individuals, this can be life-changing. For others, it may come with side effects or challenges that require careful oversight.

Natural GLP-1 support focuses on improving the body’s ability to produce and respond to GLP-1 through:

  • Gut health optimization

  • Adequate nourishment and protein intake

  • Blood sugar regulation

  • Addressing inflammation

  • Supporting digestion

For women working on fertility, hormone balance, or long-term metabolic health, supporting natural GLP-1 production is often a critical first step.

Common Side Effects and Misconceptions About GLP-1

One of the biggest misconceptions around GLP-1 weight loss is that it’s a “quick fix.” In reality, GLP-1 medications can come with side effects and long-term considerations, especially if foundational health factors are not addressed.

Common concerns discussed in the episode include:

  • Digestive discomfort

  • Appetite suppression without adequate nourishment

  • Changes in blood sugar patterns

  • Weight regain after stopping medication

This is why working with a qualified practitioner and taking a personalized approach is so important.

Who Is a Good Candidate for GLP-1 Therapy?

GLP-1 is not inherently good or bad — it’s a tool.

A good candidate for GLP-1 therapy is someone who:

  • Has addressed foundational nutrition and digestion

  • Is working with a practitioner who understands their health history

  • Has clear goals and appropriate monitoring in place

For others, especially women dealing with hormone shifts, stress, or gut dysfunction, GLP-1 medications may not be the right starting point.

Why Weight Loss Is Not One-Size-Fits-All

One of the most important themes in this conversation is that weight health is dynamic. Genetics, trauma, stress, sleep, hormones, and life stage all influence how the body responds to different tools.

Rather than framing weight loss as a personal failure, Mandy and Ashley encourage listeners to view their health journey as an ongoing experiment—one rooted in curiosity, compassion, and personalization.
